Free Energy Conservation Tips for your Home and Office conservation
As part of our responsibility to take care of the garden, we offer you
these tips on how to cut back on your energy consumption. These
tips can help save you money while
reducing your need on foreign oil and lowering pollution created by
electrical generating plants. First, a few facts from government
agencies:
- The number one
cause of air pollution is the family car.
- The number one
source of home energy consumption is the kitchen.
- The number one
cause of home energy consumption is its lack of insulation
in the ceiling, walls, windows, and floors.
Most of all, remember
that the number one cause of global warming is
carbon-dioxide emissions and that all of these suggestions
reduce such emissions either directly or indirectly.
To reduce
transportation-created energy
consumption:
- Inflate car tires properly and keep
your car well maintained.
- Replace short-distance driving with
biking or walking.
- Take public transportation to work
or school instead of driving.
- Carpool to work, school, or shopping
centers.
- Buy a fuel efficient vehicle as your
next car purchase.
Zero-cost ways to reduce home-created energy consumption:
- Use a "power strip" to switch off
your entire entertainment system (TV, VCR, DVD, satellite, etc.)
with one master switch to eliminate parasitic power draw. Look for
other items with "standby lights" and do the same for them when not
in use.
- Turn off lights and appliances when not in use.
- Use your computer's sleep mode and
use a "power strip" to turn all components (printer, monitor, PC,
etc.) when not in use.
- Disable "instant on" or "standby"
features in all TVs and appliances.
- Wash and dry dishes by hand.
- Open the dishwasher and air dry
dishes, and run only full loads.
- Wash clothes on cold cycle with
cold-water detergents and wash
only full loads.
- Do your clothes washing and drying
at night or when it's cooler.
- Dry laundry on a clothesline
whenever possible.
- Turn down your hot water heater to
120°F.
- Shorten showers by a few minutes.
- Adjust your thermostat by 1°F
cooler in winter and 1°F warmer in summer.
- Adjust your thermostat when you
leave the house by 10°F cooler in winter, 10°F warmer in summer.
- Keep your furnace and air
conditioner well maintained and replace air filters regularly.
- Cook more efficiently - cover pots,
use a pressure cooker when appropriate, keep burners clean, cook
several dishes at a time in the oven, use microwave to heat food.
- Eat cold-preparation meals in the
summer (salads and sandwiches).
- Shorten your pool cycles by one hour
per day.
- Shorten your grass watering cycles
by 5 minutes per day.
- Keep drapes or blinds closed at
night in winter and day time in summer.
- Clean refrigerator coil every 4-6
months.
- Prune lower branches of existing
trees to allow breezes through.
- Make smaller meals.
- Eat one less beef meal per week.
Low-cost ways to reduce home-created energy consumption:
- Replace halogen bulbs with
lower-heat generation types.
- Buy a flat-panel computer display.
- Buy a gas clothes dryer when your
electric dryer needs replacement.
- Install flow-restrictors in showers
and faucets.
- Replace or repair exterior door
seals (including garage doors).
- Caulk around the exterior of windows
and doors to reduce drafts.
- Insulate your hot water heater and
pipes.
- Plant trees to shade your house
during the hottest part of the day.
- Add awnings to south windows.
- Replace your water bed with an air
bed.
- Replace your lawn and garden with
low-water low-maintenance styles.
- Re-insulate your hot tub or spa with
higher-tech insulation.
- Use insulating paints when
repainting your exterior walls or recoating your roof.
- Install low-E windows or storm
windows.
